How to show up when customers ask ChatGPT or Perplexity for services near you

2026-06-21 · 7 min read · by Promptish
TL;DR

When someone asks an AI assistant "best [service] near me," it names a few businesses and stops — there's no page two. To be one of them, AI has to be able to identify you, understand what you do and where, and corroborate it across consistent sources. This guide is the concrete, in-your-control fix: machine-readable details, consistent listings, and answers AI can quote. No guarantees — but this is what makes you eligible to be named.

The behavior already changed: instead of Googling and scrolling, more people open ChatGPT or Perplexity and ask "who's the best [your trade] near me?" They get three to five names with a one-line reason each, and they call one. There's no page two to climb. So the whole game is being one of those few names — and that comes down to whether AI can identify, understand, and corroborate your business.

Why AI skips most local businesses

When an assistant won't name you, it's almost always one of three things:

Every fix below maps to one of those three. None of it is gaming an algorithm — it's making the true facts about your business legible to a machine.

The fix — 5 concrete steps

1 · Make your business machine-readable (structured data)

Add LocalBusiness structured data to your site so an AI can read your facts directly instead of guessing. At minimum: legal name, address, phone, hours, the areas you serve, and your services. Here's the shape:

{ "@context":"https://schema.org", "@type":"LocalBusiness", "name":"Your Exact Business Name", "telephone":"+1-...", "address":{ "@type":"PostalAddress", "streetAddress":"...", "addressLocality":"Your City", "addressRegion":"ST" }, "areaServed":"Your City + nearby towns", "openingHours":"Mo-Fr 08:00-18:00", "makesOffer":["Service A","Service B"] }

This is the single highest-leverage step: it converts "an AI hopes it has you right" into "an AI knows it does."

2 · Make your details identical everywhere

Your name, address and phone (NAP) must match exactly on your site, Google Business Profile, and every directory. "Ste 200" vs "Suite 200", an old number, a nickname vs the legal name — each mismatch is a reason for AI to hesitate. Pick one canonical version and make everything agree.

3 · Claim and fill your Google Business Profile

It's a primary source AI leans on for local answers. Claim it, then complete it: precise primary category, your real service area, every service listed, hours, and photos. A thin or unclaimed profile is a corroboration gap you're handing to competitors.

4 · Earn reviews and consistent mentions

Reviews and citations are how AI corroborates that you're real and good at a specific thing. Steady, recent reviews that mention the actual service and city do double duty — they reassure customers and they give the model consistent language to quote.

5 · Answer the questions customers actually ask

Write plain-language pages and a real FAQ around the phrasing people use with AI — "[service] for [customer] in [city]", "how much does [service] cost", "do you serve [neighborhood]". Mark the FAQ up with FAQPage structured data so it's directly quotable. (This very page uses FAQPage markup — that's us practicing what we preach.)

Test it in two minutes

Open ChatGPT or Perplexity (logged-out, web browsing on) and ask the way a customer would:

What are the best [your category] for [your customer] in [your city]? List 5–7 with a one-line reason for each.

Are you named? Where? With the right details? Re-run it a few weeks after you ship the fixes — AI sources refresh on their own schedule. The only metric that matters is how often AI names you, trending up.

We ran this on ourselves

We're an AI-products studio, and when we checked our own site we found zero structured data and nothing for an AI to quote — invisible by our own standard. We fixed exactly the things above. If the gaps catch an AI studio, they'll catch a local business.
